Today we’re creating a Secret Journaling Spot that looks like a beautiful piece of decorative ephemera on the outside but opens to reveal hidden accordion-style writing space inside. It’s one of those projects that’s simple to make, fun to decorate, and adds an interactive surprise to your journals.
A Hidden Surprise
At first glance, these look like ordinary collage cards tucked into a pocket or attached to a journal page. The magic happens when you open them!
The focal image on the front is carefully divided down the center so that when the piece is closed, it appears to be one complete collage. Once opened, you’ll find an accordion insert with plenty of room for:
- Journaling memories
- Favorite quotes
- Gratitude lists
- Daily reflections
- Private thoughts
- Special dates and keepsakes
It’s a wonderful way to include extra writing space while keeping everything beautifully hidden.
A Great Stash-Busting Project
One of my favorite things about this project is how versatile it is. You don’t need a special kit or complicated supplies. Simply gather papers and embellishments from your craft stash and make it your own.
Try using:
- Patterned scrapbook paper
- Vintage book pages
- Digital printable papers
- Botanical images
- Labels and tickets
- Lace or ribbon
- Fabric scraps
- Tiny embellishments
No matter your style—vintage, shabby chic, botanical, seasonal, or whimsical—this project adapts beautifully.

The goal of the 15 Minute Paper Craft Challenge is to create something fun and useful without spending hours at your craft table. This hidden journaling spot comes together quickly, making it perfect when you only have a few minutes to create.
It’s also a great project to make in batches. Once you’ve made one, you’ll probably want to create several more to tuck into future journals or keep on hand for happy mail and swaps.
